The costs of weather-related natural disasters have been rising increasing society´s and companies and individual’s costs and losses. At the same the allocation of responsibility between public authorities, the insurance industry and individual owners of buildings and homes is unclear. Future consequences of extreme weather are shaped not only by the climate and weather as such but is also closely connected to how we (individuals, public and private organizations and businesses) build our society in ways that can mitigate or cause vulnerabilities that we bring with us into the future. The aim of this symposium is to present research on these issues – from the meaning of social and spatial structures on homeowners' perceptions of risk and climate change adaption action to the actions of local government both in terms of efforts to mitigate risks but also in terms of producing future risk and vulnerabilities. The symposium is based on results from several studies (4 papers will be presented) spanning from individual home owners to municipal action in response to risks connected to climate change in Sweden. The symposium is based on two research projects funded by the Länsförsäkringar Research Foundation (a foundation connected to an insurance corporation).
