To prevent terrorism, it is essential to understand in which socio-economic condition terrorism is embedded. This contribution investigates the role of equality, measured as women’s level of education, for domestic terrorism. The general believe is that the more educated are less likely to support terrorism. As Eli Wiesel, the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize winner put it: “..The fanatic has no questions, only answers. Education is the way to eliminate terrorism”. However, the empirical evidence does not support this optimist view of education-terrorism nexus. A number of studies show no evidence of the correlation between education and terrorism, others show a positive correlation, in the sense that terrorists are relatively well educated. Counrty-specific characteristics seems to play a significant role for the outcome of the education-terrorism nexus. For instance, education and economic opportunity can be mismatched making well-educated people relatively deprived, resulting in legitimizing violence as mean toward addressing grievances. There is, however, reason to believe that gender equality serves as a deterrent to terrorism since it has been identified as proxy for social justice and other kinds of equality for minorities and other disadvantage groups in a society. However, little is known about the impact of gender equality on preventing domestic terrorism. This paper contribute to the literature by investigating whether gender equality, in terms of educational outcome, plays a role in preventing terrorism. Data on terrorist activities are obtained from Global Terrorism Database (GDT), and for data on level of education, I use the latest version of Barro and Lee (2011) dataset. Controlling for other factors of significance for terrorism, i.e. political instability, democracy, religious tensions, the extent of terrorist incidents are expected to be negatively correlated with the level of education in general; nonetheless, the correlation is stronger for the level of equality, measured in terms of women’s level of education.
