The trinational metropolitan region Upper Rhine is a European region that stretches over three countries – Germany, France, Switzerland -, is home to about 6.5 million citizens and has the gross national product equaling that of entire other European countries. Close-knit ties in every aspect of life and daily cross-border activities also create a strong interdependence and demand for a joint approach when it comes to risk analysis. In this aspect, the transdisciplinary Upper Rhine trinational Graduate Academy SERIOR (SEcurity – RIsk – ORientation) wants to tackle those challenges in the area of risk analysis in a cooperation of six Upper Rhine universities. In a Europe of Regions, this is a strong statement for interregional cooperation on a scientific level with regards to risks, uncertainty and practical strategies.
This symposium aims to highlight the work of five researchers in the area of risk analysis who are active members of the transdisciplinary Graduate Academy SERIOR team. Topics include privacy preserving (video) surveillance, a behavioral economic lab experiment that investigates the effects of framing in a defender-attacker game, the risk for an organisation if their employees leave the structure, and the impacts of pesticide contamination in small agricultural streams on freshwater invertebrate communities. Yet, all talks are linked by their risk analytical and application-oriented approach, which can be applied also in other European transnational regions.
