In this paper, we highlight the important technical and legal considerations of the application of privacy preserving technologies (PPTs) in the context of official statistics. This is achieved by providing a technical overview of the most widely used PPTs for official statistics, by providing a generic framework to think through the technical and legal implications of their use and, finally, by leveraging a range of case studies of PPTs used by national statistical institutions and international organizations. The work endeavours to act as a go-to for preliminary considerations that practitioners hoping to deploy PPTs may wish to take into account.
