Piloting Virtual Reality for Official Statistics
Virtual Reality (VR) as the computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional environment is an interesting asset for big data visualisation. Likewise, it can be used for gamification purposes, to communicate statistics in a playful and immersive. Within the DIGICOM project, Eurostat and the ESS partners have tried, in a first-of-a‑kind effort, to bring together VR and official statistics. The VR-related work within DIGICOM led to two main outcomes: the Virtual Reality for Official Statistics (ViROS) game app and the VR for Analytics, a VR application, still under development, targeting experienced statisticians interested in complex visualisations of European statistics.
