Mice deficient of interleukin-15 develop Sjogren’s syndrome-like phenotype
Interleukin 15 (IL-15) and IL-15 receptor alpha (IL-15Ra) are displayed on the cell surface as complex and used by juxtaposed cells via IL-2/15Rbg. IL-15 supports the survival of CD8+ T cells and NK cells and activates their effector function, which contributes to the pathogenesis of certain autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and celiac disease. On the other hand, we found previously that the deficiency of IL-15 or IL-15Ra in thymic antigen presenting cells results in an increase of T cell autoreactivity and of natural TH17 thymocytes. Here, we found that Il15-/- and Il15ra-/- mice develop autoimmune phenotypes that resemble Sjogren’s syndrome.
